Day 53 - Wednesday 22nd June 2005

Got the trolley-bus into the old town this morning, they certainly speed along.  We caught the funicular up to the fortress. First stop was a drink on the battlements, the views were superb.  We then and took a self guided audio tour of the castle and its courtyards and keep.   The museum was particularly interesting with a history of the Austrian Army through the ages (Well I thought it was interesting).  The "instruments of torture" display included whips, stocks, thumbscrews and a particularly vicious looking chastity belt.  The tour took quite a while.  We went back down on the funicular and bought a stand up lunch at a little  sausage sellers stand, in the market square, along with a large number of locals.  Lots of construction activity going on in the old town and several gigantic mobile cranes had been manoeuvred into place.  Several of the roofs appeared to have had new copper sheathing.  We browsed through the narrow streets lined with chocolate shops, painted egg shops and Christmas decoration shops.  The visit to Mozart's birth place was next on the agenda.  We then bought a paper and spent some time cooling off (it was hot), me with a big beer and Judy with an outrageous banana split.
