Day 15 - Sunday 15th May 2005Up late again, getting a little lazy. The sun was shining and butterflies were flittering across the lawns outside. We had breakfast then went out to enjoy the sun. We did a bit of maintenance, replacing the feet on some chairs, and then Judy and I settled down for some quiet reading while the children played the ancient French game of "Foosball". Jude and I got off our bums and went for a walk. Lots of wild flowers and butterflies and some cattle in the farm next door. We walked down to a bridge and watched the fish swimming around below before heading back. Hordes of little lizards on the stone walls of the house. After a nice lunch in the sun we set off for Chateau De Chateauneuf-En-Auxois, which is a fortified village at the top of a hill built from around 1460. Lovely drive through winding country lanes, passing through numerous small villages and across canals. We arrived at the Chateau and went for a walk through the village then through the forest cresting the hill behind. The sun was shining and the walk through the cool woods was most refreshing. We went back and toured the Chateau. Pretty impressive place, lots of fortifications commanding the plains below. The living rooms had huge fireplaces and walls covered in tapestries, coats of arms and pictures of saints. The views were spectacular across the farms and villages. Had some ice-cream and drinks at a little cafe in the village and about 60 Simcas roared past, some kind of Simca car club I imagine. The next stop was Chateau De Commarin which was a very French looking edifice surrounded by a fish filled moat. We were a little late to take the guided tour inside so we wandered round the grounds. Cameron as usual pushed the limits. We then headed back via another "scenic route" for home. Dinner consisted of some excellent artichokes that we had purchased at the Beaune market followed by local steak and salad together with some excellent red and white burgundies from the cellar. We finished off the night sitting round the fire sipping an excellent Calvados.
