Carnarvon and Kalbarri
Thursday - 2nd September
Packed up and headed on down to
Carnarvon. Countryside along the way is mainly red sand dunes covered in
wildflowers. They were beautiful. Stopped a few times for photos. Checked
into the Plantation CP in Carnarvon then did a small tour of the town before
heading back to camp for some rest and didge practice. I can almost make
the kookaburra sound with it now. Must work on the circular breathing.
Mulloway that I caught in Broome for dinner tonight.
Friday - 3rd September
Went on down the One Mile Jetty for a
bit of fishing. A little train is available to take you most of the way out
and back. We decided to walk out and ride back. Set up for fishing at the
end of the pier, plan was to stay an hour, but we ended up staying all
day. We had lots of bites and caught, mulloway, bream and flathead, but
they were all undersize and we had to throw them back. I caught the
smallest flathead, I'm sure it had to be helped onto the hook by another
fish. Still it was great fun and we had to run to catch the last train
in.
Saturday - 4th September
Nicked into town for the produce market
and picked up some nice Asian herbs and greens and some ruby grapefruit.
Came back and hitched up and headed off down the highway heading for
Kalbarri. Arrived in Kalbarri to be met with the first rain we have seen
for 3 months. Bugger. Checked into the Anchorage CP. Nice view over the
river.
Sunday - 5th September
Weather much nicer today. We headed out
to the National Park to check on some more gorges. Wonderful scenery
including a pretty big goanna. The wildflowers were beautiful and are
erupting all over the countryside. They are running an international X-treme
challenge here, with teams from all over the world. We came back to town to
watch some of the action and also to check on some of the ocean scenery.
Dinner was at Finlay's BBQ. Outdoors, no service, bring your own grog and
glasses but a great place for a meal.
Monday - 6th September
Wild winds and rain overnight, thought I
was back in Melbourne. The day was pretty dismal too. Went to the local
telecentre to do some financial stuff on the internet. Most of the
telecentres let you hook your laptop into their broadband network, makes for
quick downloads, much better than dial-up. Visited the Rainbow parrot
breeding centre. That was interesting with lots of different types of
parrots in aviaries including a big walk in aviary. We then went off down
to watch the waves along the ocean cliffs.
