Day 42 - Saturday 11th June 2005Said goodbye to Ivan at the apartment and head off. We were going to the top of the mountain overlooking Dubrovnik until we arrived at the sign indicating mine-fields. We turned back and headed off towards Split. We decided to take a detour to Mostar in Bosnia on our way to Zagreb. Its an amazing place, it has a large Turkish influence and a large Moslem population. It was obviously devastated during the war in the early 90s and many of the buildings are still derelict or seriously damaged from bombardment. The old quarter has been restored and we wandered through the alleys lined with copper smiths and hawkers selling middle eastern goods. We bought a shawl and a silk table cloth. We had a robust lunch of various meats, which we shared with the house cats, in a restaurant set in the side of a cliff overlooking the amazingly clear river. A diver from the local divers club kept threatening to dive from the very high bridge but could not raise the 25 Euro sponsorship. Pity, I had the camera set on continuous shooting too. We picked up the car and after a few false turns headed generally in the direction of Split. Amazing climate variance, hot in the valleys and snow on the surrounding mountains. The war damage in Mostar was quite sobering, but on a lighter note I almost ran the border crossing back into Croatia and was stopped by a very pleasant policeman a little further down the road because my lights weren't on. Interesting day. We overnighted in a nice hotel, the "Jodran", on the waterfront at Sibenik. Its wedding day here and lines of flag waving tooting cars are continually driving up and down the waterfront road celebrating weddings.
