Sicily Day 14 - July 9th Bay of Naples - RomeBack to the early starts. After finding my underpants, which had dropped off the window sill where Judy had left them to warm in the sun, (she doesn't like me to be cold), we left La Medusa and continued on our way north; passing the south bound Appian Way before stopping at the Commonwealth War Cemetery under the heights of the Abbey of Monte Cassino. We stayed awhile contemplating the many graves before heading off to Rome, (with a stop on the way at the ubiquitous Autogrill. Our hotel was the Sheraton Golf and we sat around the pool in the heat with some refreshing beers. In the evening we dressed up for a dinner in Rome at the Tanagra Caffe Concerto, a theatre restaurant on the Tiber. On the way we passed the Circus Maximus where Romans were gathering in front of the big screens for the World Cup. The food was good and the entertainment was spectacular, with four very accomplished performers singing various pieces from famous operas, with occasional assistance for audience members; Gabe was the victim for the Barber of Seville. It was a marvellous night. We had the early sitting to be back home before the madness that was sure to ensue in Rome after the world cup final, Antonio kept an eye on the clock and ensured we left on time. One of our troupe presented him with an apron of a dubious nature on the way back to the hotel. When we got back we arranged drinks and sat outside around the pool watching the last half of the match. Very exciting, especially with Italy winning. Free drinks all round, a few of our troupe stayed up late and I think I ended up in bed around 2am.
