Katherine

Tuesday - 6th July

Next stop was Katherine, weather really starting to heat up.  Marvellous.  Had much difficulty finding a site for the rig in Katherine.  Finally got a spot at the Riverview CP.  Nice shady site, clean facilities and walking distance from the Katherine Hot Springs.  Settled in, then off to replenish supplies of food and drink.   Dropped into the information centre where a group from Arnhem land were demonstrating traditional dances and painting.  Spent the afternoon down at the hot springs, a very popular spot. (Been away 4 weeks – time has flown)

Wednesday - 7th July

Spent the day on the 8 hour Explorer tour up the Katherine Gorges.  What a fantastic day.  It had everything, rock paintings, great scenery, crocodiles, good exercise, swimming and fruitcake with our morning tea.  We boated up to the 5th gorge which involved switching boats several times and some fairly difficult walking in the heat.   The walk was only about 7k for the trip, across pretty rocky ground, but its definitely worth it.  We had a morning tea at the 4th gorge sitting in a cool little oasis shaded by pandanus and paperbarks, then off to the fifth gorge, which involved a boat trip a longish walk and another set of boats.  We need a few swims to keep cool.  Had a great barbeque lunch back at the 4th gorge then retraced our path home.  Saw a few fish, and turtles and two freshwater crocodiles.  Alfie the boat’s captain was a wealth of information about the geology, flora and fauna and the Jawoyn traditional owners.
